questions and concerns and to maintain
a sense of personal connection. We also
established the Quarantine Chronicles in
TEAMS. Employees use the platform to
share humor and poetry, to express their
angst, and to encourage each other.
Furthermore, we recognized the
need to connect to all things familiar.
GOC was determined to still host its'
annual June retreat...but virtually. We
presented sessions on wellness and
mental well-being, creating new habits,
and becoming one's best self. We
hosted a Quarantine Photo Contest and
Scavenger Hunt and complemented the
day with a bit of competitive fun with
our version of the Shark Tank.
The pandemic generated feelings of
uncertainty and unsteadiness. However,
in the chaos that it created, it taught us
a different way of organizing our work,
gave us a better understanding of the
mission and goals, and increased our
expressed value and respect for our
colleagues and their contributions. One
consolation amidst the disruption is the
sense of freedom, safety and security
created by the ability to work remotely,
especially when everything around us
seems out of control. *

I

t was the night before COVID and all
through the world rumors were spreading
that would change the earth. Sunday, March
15, 2020 was the beginning of the HSSC
team's new normal.
Unlike in The Wiz, there were no yellow
brick roads that would lead us to the grand
wizard. But, what we knew was we have
a talented staff that would perform in the
face of fear and uncertainty. They would use
their magnificent brains to work through the
mounting challenges and had hearts of gold
to show compassion while trying to balance work and home. We are resilient and
this would be the magic that would lead us
through the pandemic of 2020.
I credit the team on their supportive management styles. Our senior staff meetings
