PUBLIC SAFETY AND JUSTICE
HOW WE ARE SUCCEEDING

SAFETY IS OUR NUMBER ONE PRIORITY
By Kayleen Irizarry, Chief Management Operations Officer,
Public Safety and Justice Cluster

S

afety is the Public Safety and Justice
Cluster's (PSJC) number one priority. Safety has been the watchword echoed
by Associate Chief Financial Officer, David
Garner, and has taken on more significance
now during this COVID-19 pandemic. The
prioritization of safety has likewise been
emphasized by our leadership at the Office
of the Chief Financial Officer (OCFO) over
these past six months. It is with this belief
that our staff at PSJC can login to work
each day committed to doing the very best.
Feeling safe and excelling at work go handin-hand and began months ago during our
preparations for telework. Led by David,
John Nitz and me, we put together a wellthought-out Continuity of Operations Plan
(COOP) that could be easily executed, while
also ensuring that staff has the necessary
equipment and network connectivity to carry
out their duties. Yet plans are only as good
as they are executed and that takes a team
effort.
This sense of togetherness and kinship brought us closer to one another and
allowed us to focus on getting things done
well despite the realities of COVID-19. We

quickly adjusted to working remotely with
minimal interruptions, held virtual trainings, conducted interviews, on-boarded
new employees, processed payroll, ensured
payments were made and posted timely,
completed multiple interim close packages,
served individuals impacted by the justice
system, consistently met or exceeded 100%
of KPI targets each month, prepared various
FRPs to reflect FY2020 spending pressure
and successfully supported PSJC agencies during the FY2021 Budget Oversight
Hearings.
Our success lies in continuously demonstrating to each other that we care about
one another's health and well-being. We
do this by conducting wellness checks,
making health and wellness our theme
for our All-Hands meeting and newsletter, and even hosting virtual happy hour,
to name a few. Having a healthy staff is
critical in ensuring we can give it our all to
service the District and its residents, businesses, commuters and visitors. Our hope
is for a proven COVID-19 vaccine so that
PSJC CONTINUES
