The Bottom Line - Fall 2020 - 53

OFFICE OF THE NFPHC CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER
HOW WE ARE SUCCEEDING

the pandemic. I had to embrace technology
to make sure the major role that I had come
to accomplish, was achievable, including
directing and overseeing the Hospital's overall policies, objectives and initiatives of the
revenue cycle activities to ensure that everything revenue related is optimized.
To my amazement, the minute I walked in
and in seconds I had my laptop and mobile
phone and went back home to work. It was
clear that safety was first and that "someone" cared about us. I started thinking
about how I was going to work with so many
people who I have not met. Thank goodness
for Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Webex, mobile
phones, conference calling, laptops, WIFI
and Net Extender. I connect with the NFPHC
team on the daily Patient Safety "huddles"
and the OCFO hospital teams through daily
huddles. I feel very connected to the teams
because of the communication resources
we have available.
The benefits of working from home are no
commute time, meal savings, less laundry/
dry cleaning, and a contact-free work environment. However, there were necessary
adjustments, including creating a secure
place to work utilizing space at home designated for something else, strict adherence
to deadlines, staying organized and making
absolutely sure that I understood everyone's
expectations. You cannot take any small

detail for granted during this time because
the COVID-19 pandemic has affected everyone. We all are in this together!
Office of the Controller - The Office Team

T

he Controller's office includes Accounts
Payable, Payroll, General Accounting,
and Budget. In March 2020, with the threat
of the COVID-19, we realized that to maximize team members' safety, we had to
identify the staff who could operate remotely
with the same efficiency as being onsite. We
reviewed job descriptions and staff responsibilities and determined that all staff could
work remotely.
The Payroll department is crucial because
it is responsible for paying the Hospital staff.
Therefore, it was imperative that the staff
was prepared for offsite operations. Crystal
Branch worked with the IT department
to provide laptops and cellphones to the
Payroll supervisor and the new employee.
As a result, we were able to produce all
biweekly payrolls by direct deposit or debit
card since leaving the Hospital in March
2020. All hospital staff received notification
that all payroll transaction inquiries were
required to take place via telephone and/or
email.
