HOW WE ARE SUCCEEDING

excitement of the Lottery to players' phones
and computers.
Some people questioned, "What's essential about the Lottery? Why were you selling
during the Stay at Home Order?"
In the District of Columbia, the Lottery's
net profits are transferred to the General
Fund to support a myriad of essential services such as education, recreation and
parks, public safety, housing, and senior and
child services. The money generated from
the Lottery directly supports city services.
We have an obligation to continue to operate in a responsible and safe manner to continue to fund the District's public services
and help to offset budget shortfalls caused
by this pandemic. In addition, our retailers
are small businesses, many of which are
deemed essential during this emergency
and they continue to depend on lottery sales
to help them offset financial losses resulting
from the COVID-19 pandemic.
As we enter advanced phases of
re-opening the District, the Lottery is
expanding our Lottery's in-person business
operations, where necessary, but we are
doing so with an abundance of caution that
balances the safety and personal needs
of our staff members with supporting the

organization's business needs. Operations
and functions that cannot be performed
100% remotely are phasing back into the
office with rotating skeleton crews so that
we have a lower number of staff in the
building at the same time, as well as returning staff to the field through scheduled
visits with retailers.
With more people staying home, shifting
the way they shop, and reassessing how
much they have (or choose) to spend on
entertainment, the Lottery must be nimble
and ready to adapt to whatever the "new
normal" becomes in a post-pandemic,
brick-and-mortar retail environment. We
will not only be working toward continued
growth in our traditional lottery game portfolio through the development of entertaining
products and engaging player promotions,
but also working to develop and grow our
new gaming categories - sports wagering
and iLottery - and through our new, digitized
sales channels.
But, in what likely will be an extremely
challenging year ahead, we will continue to
enhance the Lottery's brand and product
innovation to transform how we conduct
business, explore new ways to reach players, and increase our overall revenue generation potential. *
