The Bottom Line - Fall 2020 - 9

OFFICE OF CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT
HOW WE ARE SUCCEEDING

SMARTER values as a foundation to continue supporting our mission:

The mission of the Office of the
Chief Financial Officer (OCFO) is
to enhance the fiscal and financial stability, accountability, and
integrity of the Government of the
District of Columbia
The leap forward in culture and technology will provide dividends for years to come.
I have already been a part of many discussions about the pros and cons of remote
work, new technologies, and process modifications that will help us stay productive in
our new-found environment. I expect staff
is also tracking lessons learned and documenting how we can continuously improve
moving forward. The last six months provided an initial thrust, but it's on us to
actively maintain that positive trajectory.
We must embrace change in order to
maintain our new momentum. I will be
focused on this effort in the fall and look
forward to ensuring we continue our progress. We will assess the current environment and engage with you on best practices. In the next month, you will receive an
enterprise survey. It is designed to solicit
feedback from all staff which will inform
future strategies. The goal is to amplify
what is working and address weaknesses

head-on. We have demonstrated that we
can adapt but we must stay diligent and
agile. Cyber-attacks are evolving, modified office environments will be the norm
and adoption of new technologies will be
required. Continued adaptability in operations and alignment to our values will be
essential to excelling in an uncertain future
- where the call to government service has
never been louder. OCFO is a critical contributor to the government's efforts to serve
our city's communities, residents, businesses and visitors.
I hope, like me, you find comfort in being
part of an organization that cares about
its staff, its city and its mission. Thank you
OCFO for providing a supportive and adaptable response to the COVID-19 crisis. Thank
you to those that check-in with each other,
communicate with empathy, plan virtual
meetups, adapt to new processes, deploy
creative All-Hands, and embrace change.
I recognize and applaud the outstanding
individual efforts of so many. Thank you,
Leadership, for your resolve, vision, and
grace. Thank you, Managers and Staff, for
remaining flexible, adaptable and productive
in unique circumstances. Thank you OCIO
for making new technologies accessible and
stable. Thank you to all who have stepped
up in a complex and historic time to work
SMARTER. I am grateful to work for the
OCFO and I appreciate all of you. *
