VERNON E. JORDAN JR.
FELLOWSHIP

A

mira R. Alghumgham, 36, a doctoral
candidate at Howard University is an
intern in the Office of Revenue Analysis
(ORA). She is also
the winner of the
Vernon E. Jordan
Jr.
Fellowship
that comes with a
$10,000 stipend.
This award is given
by The Economic
Club of Washington
to support the independent research
on topics of interest to the Club, such as
economics and finance.
Ms. Alghumgham said, "It was a very
intense competition that included students
from schools throughout the area, and I
am very gratified that I was recognized for
the quality of my research". She will use
the stipend to help pay her expenses as
she works toward her degree.
ORA Deputy CFO, Dr. Fitzroy Lee said,
"We select candidates with data analytic
skills because that is the crucial skill necessary for the work we do at ORA. It enables
them to be more quickly productive."
He added, "Amira is a very bright and
astute economics scholar. She has been
a part of the ORA family for almost a year,
studying the effectiveness of tax incentives on economic development, which

she developed into research for her dissertation. So, I was not surprised when the
Economic Club of Washington recognized
her outstanding dissertation. It is well-deserved and the ORA family is very happy
for her".
Ms. Alghumgham said, "I primarily
analyze raw economic data and help my
colleagues convert it into information that
can be useful to District policy makers. I
looked at the baseball stadium, Gallery
Place and the Target store in Mount
Pleasant to determine their impacts on the
community and its residents. These findings can help determine the potential success of new projects".
"It has been a very rich experience,
she added. "The staff is encouraging and
positive. In addition to my professional
development, I have learned a lot about
working in a team and the benefits of a
collegial culture".
Commenting on Amria's work, her
supervisor, Senior Economist Daniel
Muhammad said, "Amira is very bright
and dedicated to producing quality work.
Her analysis demonstrated that the three
projects made a measurable and positive
difference in the development and quality
of life in those neighborhoods".
