backstory 096 W hips, chains , handcuffs and-mannequins? No, this scene isn't from some S&M dungeon- rather, the dominatrix duo is on display in a Red Light District boxed vignette as part of "The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk" exhibit, on view at the Brooklyn Museum through Feb. 23. The innovative and interactive, punchy and poignant Jean Paul Gaultier tour de force began its world tour at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and hits 10 cities across the world; Brooklyn February 2014 is the only East Coast destination. The exhibition is grouped into seven themes, like "The Boudoir" and "The Odyssey," and merges art, fashion, pop culture and technology with an underlying tone of redefining beauty (think plus-sized mannequins, men in corsets and skirts, and the 2012 Amy Winehouse-influenced dress that male model Andrej Pejic waltzed down the catwalk). Lucie Jolicoeur, president and CEO of Jolicoeur International Inc., created 130 mannequins for the exhibit in varying shapes and sizes, ranging from extra-small waists to size 14 figures, and in an ethnic rainbow of natural flesh tones. "Designing and manufacturing the mannequins specifically for the Gaultier exhibition is like having our own design incubator," Jolicoeur says. "The project has forced us to stretch the limits of our capabilities in terms of the flexibility and finishes of the mannequins we produce." Greeting guests, theatrical lighting highlights a life-size mannequin of Gaultier, whose highdefinition face is projected with synchronized movement as he talks, blinks and flirts in English and French with visitors. On this and other animated mannequins, the naked eye does not see that the mannequin's neck, covered in fiberglass coatings, conceals projection equipment-a triumph of engineering.
