adidas Originals opened in October, and is its largest in the world, with the feel
of an impressive, warehouse-scaled studio built on the ideal of connecting with
creatives. The 4,966-sq.-ft. flagship, located in Wicker Park, is designed to evoke a
community-centric experience that celebrates the urban lifestyle and highlights
local creatives' art like that of POSE and Tubsz, while the non-profit iPaintMyMind
also curates a rotating selection of area artists. In this endeavor, adidas thrives at
paying homage to its surroundings, seen through its selection of cool streetwear like
track jackets, camo-printed sweats, and a grid of Stan Smith and NMD kicks, down
to its Community Wall where neighborhood events are posted. A "statement" area
features Consortium merchandise and collaborations with the likes of Alexander
Wang and Mastermind Japan. Beneath exposed ceilings, even the signage directing
shoppers to fitting rooms is "tagged" on the floor like graffiti on the streets. adidas
organically sells the creative ideal with eclectic seating such as soft, plush chairs in
electric blue and a comfy honeyed brown leather coach with oversized faded oriental
rugs. Coffee tables are topped with succulents in natural, unpolished ceramics, while
various sized speakers make a statement, adorning a black wall before a lounge area
encouraging shoppers to kick back and chill.

Shinola

1009 N. Rush St.
This fall, Shinola, the ever-growing Detroit-based brand that prides itself on a culture of American
manufacturing and craftsmanship, opened its second Chicago boutique. Following the success of its
Bucktown area store, Shinola debuted a 2,200-sq.-ft. outpost in the Gold Coast neighborhood. With
a cult following, Shinola knew simple window displays-like a swanky, bright red bicycle-could
make enough of a statement to lure passersby. From the street, shoppers can catch a glimpse of the
Willard Bar, a neat watch program that offers countless customization options with a plethora of
gorgeous leather straps and watch faces displayed against a black wall. Meanwhile, the white back
wall shows off colorful leather bags that appear to float on white shelves beneath bright overhead
lights. More leather goods, from duffle bags to colorful journals, are housed in custom, built-in
blonde-colored wood units and tables, at times complemented with a rich, gray felt display material.
Throughout the store, a couple retro-style bikes are propped up and secured with Shinola-branded
wood fastenings for visitors to admire while taking a break in rich, red-brown leather seats and
listening to vinyl records. This marks Shinola's 22nd brick-and-mortar shop in the United States.

lululemon

167 N. Sangamon St.
Yoga-inspired apparel gets an artful treatment at lululemon's new Fulton Market Local
concept store, which opened last fall. The Fulton River District boutique pays tribute to
its creative neighborhood-the interior was part of a collaborative design with Emmy
Star Brown, a local painter, illustrator, calligrapher and pattern designer. Inside the
brick-clad, 1,200-sq.-ft. shop, the area's industrial-meets-artistic DNA is felt through
accents like a concrete cash desk, an exposed wall, salvaged American antique furnishings from Urban Remains, in-store art and a digital community board highlighting
local run routes, top picks for juice bars and a guide to area workouts. The men's and
women's merchandise-displayed in earthy greens, soft grays and deep purples-also
boasts a more sophisticated city vibe.

The North Face
1629 N. Damen Ave.
In the Windy City, outerwear matters and, after catering to a steady crowd in its first Chicago
location, The North Face opened its second store this fall in a 3,337-sq.-ft. space. To coincide
with the Damen Avenue opening, The North Face brought back its Original Daypack and
Duffel Collection using archived designs from 1968 and 1978 with the addition of gunmetal
leather detailing by Horween Leather Co. Aptly, the bags were manufactured in a thirdgeneration Chicago factory. The store offers men's and women's footwear, trendier camouflage
backpacks, star-printed knit hats, equipment and high-functioning outdoor apparel. Beyond
logoed merchandise, the brand's essence is captured in displayed prints of campers with
pitched tents in the snow, inspiring a sense of adventure for today's urban explorers.
