Vantage House is a high-rise
continuing care retirement community located in Columbia, Md.
An innovative "new town" created in the '60s, located between
Baltimore and Washington, D.C.,
Columbia consists of a series of
residential villages connected to
Columbia's higher density downtown. Vantage House is situated
on the edge of town, on a fiveacre site overlooking downtown.
Vantage House is a not-for
profit organization that opened
in the mid-1980s with independent living located in an 11-story
tower, and nursing care located
in a separate five-story tower. The
two-story base of these two towers created the community center.
Designed to serve the GI generation, Vantage House exhibited
the environmental and programmatic trappings of that era. It was
cosmetically renovated in the
late '90s to appeal to a changing
marketplace and to incorporate
assisted living within the nursing
tower.
Declining occupancy and
increased competition in recent
years prompted its board to
renovate to achieve several goals:
activate the overall interior environment and programs, appealing
to the new consumer; emphasize
wellness of body, mind, and spirit;

provide an appropriate
memory care environment;
and create a new, vibrant
main entrance appearance.
Filling in beneath two building overhangs permitted
expansion without violating
the limited footprint, gaining
space for expanded fitness,
rehab, classroom, and movie
theater areas.
Other significant changes
consist of a new front entry,
new café marketplace, and
the addition of an expanded
spa and fitness space visible from the lobby. A new
contemporary open stair added
to the redefined Winter Garden
will connect to the second floor.
This floor was reconfigured to
include a variety of dining ven-

ues such as the pub/grill, casual
dining with exhibition cooking,
destination formal dining, and a
terrace for alfresco dining.
Finally, the fifth floor will house
