EFA DESIGN SHOWCASE
ASSISTED LIVING

Charlestown, Caton Woods CATONSVILLE, MD.
Submitted by: Hord Coplan Macht BALTIMORE, AND Merlino Design Partnership GULPH MILLS, PA.
This building is the first of a
four-phase project that replaces
all of the continuing care on the
campus (assisted living, skilled
nursing, and memory care).
The building design mimics the
operational goals of providing a
Person Centered Approach (PCA)
environment, allowing residents
choice based on their needs and
preferences throughout the day.
The PCA is reflected in the
building by providing care in a
homelike atmosphere. The layout
focuses on reducing the number
of residents in a typical neighborhood while clustering rooms to
account for the proper staffing
ratios. The traditional nurses'
station has been removed and, instead, touchdown and staff areas
are provided throughout.
Connecting the neighborhoods is a vertical Town Center
anchored by the terrace level. This
Town Center houses the building's
shared amenities. These amenities
mimic those of a typical neighborhood Town Center-fitness
center, salon, spa, art studio, movie
theater, and café. These features
encourage residents to venture out
of the neighborhood to socialize
and participate in activities.
The neighborhoods also include
elements that recreate a traditional
home environment. A dedicated

elevator connects the main kitchen
to the resident pantries allowing
for quick and efficient food
delivery. Resident country kitchens
have varying counter heights to
allow residents with different needs
to participate in activities.
The dining room features
moveable tables in a variety of
sizes allowing for family style or
more intimate dining opportunities. Direct access from each
dining room to an outdoor patio
or deck allows residents to connect
with nature throughout the day.
