The owner's existing Garden
Court Café had not received any
renovations since it was built in

physical structure but also to the
types of foods and services offered.
The resulting design took cues

1999. The space was not user-friend-

from a local farmers market, focus-

ly and residents had difficulties

ing on fresh foods (some locally

navigating the serving line when

sourced during the summer) and

selecting foods. Another challenge

a wide range of almost eclectic

was the ability of food service staff

options. New to the café are a coffee

to prepare healthy, nutritious meals

shop, grab-and-go offerings, and a

that appealed to new residents, often

pizza station, which complement

younger seniors, arriving in the

a salad bar, deli, and hot entrée

community. To provide fresh appeal,

station. Another new dining experi-

updates were needed not only to the

ence to be offered is a patio dining
component.
The design aesthetic of an urban
farmers market utilizes rustic and
reclaimed natural-looking materials.
Worn brick tile graces the entry and
grill hood. The floors combine rustic
wood-look tile with Old World tile
medallions. The coffee shop serving
counter simulates reclaimed planks.
The contemporary café design is
more open and allows for greater
circulation space between the food
offerings. To achieve this, a seldom
utilized internal stair that connected
the café to a mezzanine seating area
was removed. The mezzanine still
provides a secondary seating area
and is available for private parties,
but now access to the space is from
an existing elevator.
