Environments for Aging - Winter 2017 - 31

EXPO &
CONFERENCE

PREVIEW

linear parks, streetscapes, and sustainable
features can enhance and promote the
wellness concept.

E18-Universal Design at Home and
Beyond
This presentation will provide an overview
of universal design principles and offer
steps for how those principles can be
applied at home and in the broader community. Presenters will reference research
performed at the nation's first universally
designed YMCA and examine design elements that were intentionally integrated to
allow those with physical impairments to be
able to fully utilize the facility and services
offered. Insights will include how those
elements could transfer to an array of community building types and to the home to
allow individuals to age in place.

E28-Just Like Home: Designing
Residences for Older Adults

PWP STUDIO (EFA)

Senior living residences often follow a similar design model and offer standardized
living quarters, limiting the personalization
of the space and the attachment one feels

to it. Following observations of several
older adults living in residences in
Québec, this session will demonstrate
how owners tried-some successfully,
some not-to transform quarters into
personalized homes. These findings offer concrete guidelines that can be applied to the design of new or renovated
residences.

E33-Design From Their
Perspective: The Caregiver
Attendees will witness and understand the activities, environment, and
emotions that caregivers experience
on a daily basis as they create a safe
and secure environment for elders.
The presentation will document how
one designer's day was spent working
alongside three caregivers, serving the
duties and tasks of a certfied nursing
assistant, dining services worker, and
housekeeping employee. Witnessing
and engaging in all aspects of these
duties helped contribute to a new
awareness of interior design hits and
misses.

CLOSING KEYNOTE

Louis Tenenbaum

Aging in place expert Louis Tenenbaum
will bridge the senior living design and
home medical equipment industries and
provide insight on ways he thinks the two
can work together in the EFA Expo closing
keynote presentation, "Stronger Together:
Equipment and Design." The founder of
HomesRenewed, a coalition of business,
government, not-for-profit, and consumer
stakeholders that supports aging in
place, Tenenbaum will share research
findings that show how aging at home can
improve healthcare outcomes and reduce
medical costs. He'll then dive into why he
believes that updating and equipping the
nation's existing housing stock is a big
opportunity that's eluded manufacturers,
distributors, designers, and builders.
He contends that through collaboration,
designers and equipment manufacturers
have the potential to crack the market
wide open. Tenenbaum's presentation,
scheduled for noon on Wednesday, March
1, is the only EFA Expo keynote open to
attendees of both shows. For more details
