Q&A

Jennifer Sheehan, IIDA, NCIDQ
Project Manager/Senior Designer
Spellman Brady & Company
How does your firm
answer industry goals
for achieving a sense of
community and creating
homelike environments
for seniors?
Building strong meaningful
relationships with our clients
is key. We find that having
open communication helps
achieve that goal. Getting
to know our clients, their
expectations and what
community means to them
is essential. We study
many things that help
create a warm, homelike
environment while keeping
health, safety and ease of
maintenance in the forefront
such as researching the
demographics, surrounding
area, culture and most of
all, what's important to the
residents.

How will the design of
those spaces change
to meet the demands
of today's senior
consumers?
The hospitality industry
plays a big role in
Senior Living and the
Spellman Brady world.
Each community has a
different vision for their
residents. Keeping
that in mind we look
at spaces from many
different angles; we
study the use, function
and how it impacts
emotion. Our goal
is to tap into those
needs and develop a
design that fits their
community using the
latest evidence-based
knowledge, technology
and services.

What drew you to the
senior living design
sector?
I knew I was going to be
an interior designer when I
was little. It is my passion.
During college, I focused on
hospitality design. I studied
under architects and interior
designers from all industries
after graduation and I found
myself designing beautiful
hospitality spaces that
impacted many people.
It was exciting work and
I loved it, but I wanted
to create spaces which
brought me a stronger
purpose. And, seeing how
the spaces I helped to
create impact residents and
communities is so fulfilling.
Is there an experience
you've had personally or
with a client/residents
that changed the way
you view your work?
My grandfather, who

dementia, loved his family
and would do anything for us.
When we found out about
his illness, we did everything
we could for him. But, until I
was in that moment, I did not
realize how difficult it was to
care for someone that once
cared for me. Remembering
all the greatness he brought
to me while watching
his loss of memory was
overwhelming. Designing
spaces to make a home for
people like my grandfather
and their families makes what
I do my passion.
