Q&A

with Dan Dokken, AIA, LEED AP+
Senior Vice President, LK Architecture
Describe your business
in one sentence.
LK Architecture is a
multidiscipline A/E
firm, with in-house
architecture, interior
design, MEP engineering,
and landscape/
planning professionals,
that specializes in the
creation and placement
of dynamic senior
living environments
for providers that have
national/regional build-out
programs.

What's one critical
question your team
always asks clients
in initial project
meetings? Why?
I don't think that there
is one specific question
to start off with, but
instead, a suite of
questions that will
try to define what will
constitute a successful
outcome in the owner's
eyes. What is the
desired outcome when
the project is built and

the money is spent? This
is typically a combination
of pleasing the end user,
providing an environment
that facilitates care
giving, and creating
a project that meets
the proforma. Once
these parameters are
established, the design
exploration process can
begin.
In what sector of senior
living do you expect to
see the most growth in
the next few years?
When we talk about the
Baby Boomers that are
beginning to flood the
senior living market,
we sometimes forget
that this generation
encompasses the
gamut of economic
stratums. At this time,
we typically concentrate
on development that
accommodates those

that are in the upper
stratums. We design
environments that attract
those who have ample
resources to afford the
glitz and glitter. As an
architect, these projects
are fun and rewarding
and there will continue to
be a demand for these
projects. I think that in
the future, though, there
is going to be a need to
accommodate the growing
number of Baby Boomers
that need an affordable
option to care for their
aging needs.
How will the design of
those spaces change
to meet the demands
of today's senior
consumers?
The challenge of
affordable senior living
is fairly obvious, but it
will require a significant
effort to achieve. It will
require a collaboration
between the architect
and the provider to strike
the proper balance of the
built environment and how
services are to be provided
in an economical manner
while still providing the
meaningful, vibrant, dayto-day, lifestyle that all
seniors deserve. It can be
done!
