What's one major
design or care delivery
trend that's shaping
your work today? And
how so?
Food service delivery is
an ever-evolving trend
requiring a significant
amount of research to
ensure programming
and implementation
effectiveness. Bistros
now offer casual dining
choices throughout the
day, while main dining
areas have become
true restaurants with
an array of menus and
cooking styles. These
updates are becoming
standard throughout all
levels of care, including
memory care as offering
food choices supports a
critical wellness program
for residents. 

What's one critical
question your team
always asks clients
in initial project
meetings?
"How can we help
maximize staff
efficiency?" With staffing
challenges a growing
reality for communities,
we need to understand
how efficient design
can save steps, and
even decrease the
amount of staff needed
to perform routine
functions. Our focus on
designing unique staff
areas ensures recruiting
and retention efforts
are an integral part
of our communities'
environments. By
creating optimal work
environments, we
strive to contribute to

increased job satisfaction
and reduced turnover. 
What drew you to the
senior living design
sector? Is there an
experience you've had
personally or with a
client/resident that
changed the way you
view your work?
Early in my career I met
a gentleman in the early
stages of dementia with
trouble remembering
which floor was his. After
telling him he lived on the
"green" floor, he would
always tell me green was
his favorite color, and
that's where he lived now.
For the first time in my
life I realized the profound
effect the environment has
on individuals, reaffirming
my love for the industry
and the small things
we do to make a huge
difference.

In what sector of senior
living do you expect to
see the most growth in
the next few years?
Baby boomers have
changed every industry
since they were born,
and they are already
changing senior housing.
Impactful spaces will
be required, with some
amenities having crossover
with hospitality and care
services. Technology will
be paramount for residents,
staff and operations
while intergenerational
programming and
connectivity to the
neighborhood will also
be dominant elements of
design. All levels of care
will require a focus on
affordability with desired
amenities and a costeffective transition to care.
