cohousing
In the book "Senior Cohousing
Primer: Recent Examples and New
Projects," co-authors Charles Durrett and Jean Nilsson discuss the
benefits of cohousing, model types,
and community planning considerations as well as examine 15
cohousing communities developed
by McCamant & Durrett Architects,
a Nevada City, Calif.-based firm specializing in planning cohousing projects. Durrett, co-credited with coining the term "cohousing," draws on his 30-plus-year
career designing and building these communities and shares direct insights from
residents and observations that are key to successful cohousing development
and community building. The 154-page book also includes examples of how
communities are designed to reflect an area's personality or focus, such as the
Oakcreek Community in Stillwater, Okla., which incorporates a courtyard to support local senior musicians looking for a place to do impromptu performances.

drive increased health and
long-term care costs. We
need a plan that brings everyone to the table-local
communities, labor, private
sector, and philanthropy-
to help us understand
what's coming and guide
us toward taking better
care of older Californians.
-California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who signed an
executive order in June that calls for the creation of
a "Master Plan for Aging" to be developed by Oct. 1,
2020. The plan will serve as a blueprint for the state
to build environments that promote healthy aging.
