Light and Spectral Exposure: A Day in
the Life of a Care Center Resident

Residential Meets Assisted Living

Lighting affects all of us physiologically, and nowhere is this
more critical than in facilities where residents have limited
access to the outdoors in their daily activities. There are
ways to help improve the quality of life for these individuals,
using intentional access to the outdoors and electric lighting
changes over the 24-hour day that more closely mimic
daily light modulation. Research using a crossover study
of lighting conditions is showing promising results. This
presentation by a specialist in design for the aging eye and
a lighting researcher addressing human health and wellbeing will combine practice and experience in this new area.

Jane Rohde, principal, JSR Associates,
Inc.

Naomi Miller, FIES, FIALD, LC, straddles
the line between design and engineering at
the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory
in Portland, Ore. By bridging the gap
between technology and application, she promotes the
wise use of LEDs, working with industry to overcome hurdles
and celebrate the opportunities. She currently serves on the
Illuminating Engineering Society's board of directors.

Eunice Noell-Waggoner is the founding
president of the Center of Design for an
Aging Society, a not-for-profit organization
dedicated to improving environments
to support the dignity, independence, health, and safety
of our aging population. She serves on the Lighting for
Older Adults and the Visually Impaired Committee of the
Illuminating Engineering Society; the Low Vision Design
Committee of the National Institute of Building Science;
and the Lighting Topic Group of the Facilities Guidelines
Institute. Her primary focus is on lighting to support aging
vision and electric light and daylight for human health,
including circadian rhythm and vitamin D synthesis.

The edges between different types of living and care
settings continue to blur as opportunities from the
residential community and the deinstitutionalization of
traditional models are developing for residents needing
assisted living and memory care services. The goal of
this presentation is to explore innovation as a means for
designing and providing smaller-scale homes that are
as close to everyday living as possible. Join us for the
journey and the potential adventure of rethinking the
delivery of assisted living and memory care services for
elders and their families. Case study examples will be
shared and provide a basis for the discussion.

Jane Rohde, AIA, FIIDA, ASID, CHID,
ACHA, believes in a global cultural
shift toward person-centered solutions
for healthcare settings and sits on
various healthcare and sustainability committees
supporting research, advocacy, and humanistic
approaches to care. In 2015, she received the first
Changemaker Award for Environments for Aging
from The Center for Health Design and in 2018, she
received the ASID Design for Humanity Award. She has
been recognized as an Honorary Alumna of Clemson
University's Architecture + Health program and has
been honored as one of the top 10 Women in Design
demonstrating leadership in healthcare and senior
living design.
