Environments for Aging - Fall 2020 - 35

menity spaces are the lifeblood of any senior living community-they're
where residents, staff, and visitors can come together (in non-pandemic
conditions, of course) to pursue hobbies, share a meal, and enjoy one
another's company. And if recent senior living projects show us anything,
it's that the industry has been pursuing a new take on these critical areas
to both energize and modernize them for current and prospective residents.
Here in our 12th annual Remodel/Renovation Competition, the winners capture just
that. Take our Gold winner, Cranes Mill at West Caldwell - Wellness & Aquatic Center
in West Caldwell, N.J., submitted by KDA Architects. The project was inspired by the
realization that an aging commons building lacked the vitality desired, particularly in
its health and wellness areas. Its revitalization includes a brightly lit space enlivened
with art and plenty of connection to the outdoors. Our Silver and Bronze winners both
tackled the common challenge of breathing new life into outdated dining spaces.
Juniper Village at Bucks County in Bensalem, Pa., submitted by DesignPoint and
Juniper Design Group, transformed underutilized and dated interiors to create a cool
new café with a "tech bar," a cocktail piano bar, and a multistory destination dining
venue. Meanwhile, Riddle Village Retirement Community in Media, Pa., submitted by

Bernardon, successfully preserves the valued Colonial aesthetic of its existing space
while transforming it through a touch of modern design and an open floor plan to create
a welcoming, communal setting.
These winners were selected by a jury invited by SAGE (Society for the Advancement
of Gerontological Environments) and will be honored at an EFA magazine awards
luncheon to take place at the 2021 EFA Expo & Conference, scheduled for April 24-27
in Chattanooga, Tenn. Many thanks to our jury members (listed at right) as well as our
program participants. Turn the page to read more about the winners-congratulations
to all!-Jennifer Kovacs Silvis, editor-in-chief

About the submissions: The Remodel/Renovation Competition submissions come from across the U.S. and cover
a variety of construction costs and project scopes. Every year, a multidisciplinary panel of invited jurors from SAGE
(Society for the Advancement of Gerontological Environments) reviews the submissions. The panel includes architects,
interior designers, researchers, academics, regulatory experts, and providers. Jurors view the submissions according
to their areas of expertise, then rate the submissions and provide comments to help clarify the rationale for the rating
before selecting winners. Jurors are excluded from reviewing projects that they or their firms were involved with; jurors
who are associated with projects in the finalist round are not permitted to vote for winners. All participants pay a small
entry fee and receive coverage of their project in the Remodel/Renovation Gallery (see page 43). The top three projects
receive expanded coverage on the pages that follow. All write-ups were provided directly by the submitting firms and
were not edited for content by the Environments for Aging editorial staff.
