REGION 5 & 6 CONFERENCE ECNEREFNOC 6 & 5 NOIGER GLA ALA REGION 5-6 SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS REFLECT ON THEIR EXPERIENCE GLA ALA awarded registration fee scholarships to the Region 5-6 Conference, held October 11 through October 13, 2012, at the Disneyland Resort and Convention Center in Anaheim, CA. Those winners reflect on their experience and share some personal highlights below. of areas such as technology and services focused on the legal industry. I enjoyed bumping into business partners with whom I have worked on so many projects in the past. Overall, the Conference creates a unique, intensive learning experience as well as networking opportunities that energize one’s efforts to continually improve and grow in your career, while simultaneously providing a fun vacation from all of the normal day-to-day responsibilities.” - Helen Youngblood “I am one of the lucky members whose Firm graciously offered to pay for me to attend the Regions 5/6 ALA Conference in Anaheim, held October 11-12, 2012. I was really thrilled to later learn that I was even luckier--I won one of two Conference scholarships offered at the GLA ALA Financial Forum from our chapter. This was my third opportunity to attend an ALA Regional Conference, and each year I walk away feeling so enriched and excited about the future law firm. I attended such interesting sessions, round tables, and panel discussions this year. I learned about the benefits and pitfalls of integrating mobile technology into the office, I gained information about how to best handle a difficult conversation in the office, and I heard experts discuss innovative ideas for partner compensation, plus much, much more. ALA Conferences not only provide an educational opportunity, but also a chance to see the great products and services offered by our Business Partners. In Anaheim, the Exhibit Hall was bustling with cutting edge technology and new and exciting services for the law firm. From the latest billing software to the green office approach, it’s all demonstrated in the Exhibit Hall, along with the chance for attendees to win fantastic drawings from the Business Partners. And let’s not forget one of the best parts of attending Conference -- the chance to see friends made over the years, not only from GLA ALA, but also from other chapters as well as our Business Partners. I especially enjoyed our closing luncheon at Catal in Downtown Disney with the Orange County Chapter, ICS and Nationwide. Aside from the most delicious parmesan risotto, it was a perfect way to wrap up the excellent three-day event.” – Kris Kroeckenberg “Networking with my fellow ALA members was terrific, as always. I learn so much, not only from the sessions, but also from my peers both in roundtable discussions and in informal gatherings. The region conference truly is a wonderful educational opportunity, on many levels. I also appreciated how well the Disneyland Anaheim organization facilitated our event. Of course, the receptions put on by the various business partners were fantastic also! I’m looking forward to the 2013 conference!” - Anne L.V. Logan “I attended my first Region 6 Conference in Anaheim this October. I found the conference to be well organized and the educational sessions to be both informative and entertaining. I was able to expand my administrative skills and obtain several hours of CLM recertification credit at the same time. And I attended on a scholarship presented by the GLA ALA. All this and it was free, too! The location of the Conference at the Disneyland Hotel was wonderful, as it offered easy access to meeting rooms, yet was very close to restaurants and entertainment. I will definitely attend and look forward to the Region 6 Conference in Reno next year.” - Debbie Dahlen, CLM “I was very excited and grateful to win a drawing for a GLA ALA scholarship tuition to the 2012 ALA Region 6 Conference in Anaheim. Attending the Conference served as a significant source of inspiration, new perspectives and insights as well as an opportunity to refresh and update my body of knowledge. Choosing from the considerable menu of educational seminars is the equivalent experience of a kid in a candy shop – very difficult to confine my choices to just a few! In Dick Butterfield’s inspirational keynote speech, a different slant on leadership was created, combining his strategies and techniques from his acting career and communication coaching practice. The speaker, using his unique perspective of an accomplished Shakespearian actor, believed an Administrator needed to project and speak up to drive change and project leadership in order to gain the necessary credibility and support to “accelerate your firm’s success.” The Conference brings together ALA members from such wide geographical areas creating an exciting opportunity to network not only with members of your local chapter in a relaxed setting, but the opportunity to meet members from different parts of the country, extending to Canada. Additionally, the fantasy-like experience of The Disney Hotel and the City of Anaheim added its own unique backdrop of the “getaway” experience of the Conference. Visiting the Business Partner Exhibit Hall provides enormous access to so many industry providers to keep abreast of new developments and trends in a wide variety Steve Morris, CLM welcomes attendees. ALA’s new Executive Director, Oliver Yandle addresses the attendees. 28 Greater Los Angeles Leadership Exchange
