GLA ALA -
WHAT'S MY HOBBY?
CLASSIC
MOVIES!

My hobby in itself
wouldn't be recognized
unique or fundamentally
groundbreaking, but with
a little imagination and
ingenuity something normal
transcends into marvelous.
My hobby is movies,
vintage old classics to be
exact. There is something
about slouching into an
old red velvet chair in a
classically dusty theater
and watching Cary Grant,
Steve McQueen, Sophia
Lauren and Judy Garland
elegantly grace the
scratched 35mm projected
image. But imagination
is front and center, so my
organized movie nights
take place in old buildings,
on mountain tops, on a
beach or in an abandoned
mid century downtown
loft. The venue should
replicate the film, don't
you think? Not just the
venue, but also the food,
drink, décor and wardrobe
of the invited guests must
always replicate the chosen
era of the film. So, relax,
dress the part and engage,
have a drink and prepare
to step inside a vintage
masterpiece.

WOODWORKING!

After a long week of working on a computer, sending
emails, and compiling spreadsheets, there really is
nothing like being able to create something tangible
with your hands. Now don't get me wrong, I make
a mean spreadsheet and there is great joy to be had
from balancing the credit card account, but it's just
not the same as physically and manually creating
something beautiful. When my husband and I bought
our house in early 2013, the half-acre property came
with several trees that weren't long for this world. As
we set to cleaning up the yard and felling the trees,
I felt my inner-hoarder come out. "Don't throw that
wood away! I am going to make something with
it..." Some of the trees were half-eaten by termites
and made for some really interesting designs in the
wood. I made a breakfast bar from walnut and resin
and added LED lights to the underside to add a nice
glow. (See bar top) We also have a mulberry tree
whose branches were perfect for an arch in the back
of the yard. (See arch way) The trunk of a mostly
dead tree has also contributed several wood slices
to the artistic cause. I am working on my first inlay
piece with one of these heavily termite-damaged
slices using natural turquoise and a resin finish to
add a bright contrast to the gnarled wood. And now, Bar top
thanks to several large pieces of pine we recently
rescued from certain wood-chipper doom, I have no
shortage of materials for several projects to come.
Now accepting orders for log-themed décor.
