GLA ALA -
WHAT'S MY HOBBY?
CYCYLING: WHY HAVE A BUCKET LIST?

It all began with a 14-mile ride on a heavy steel bike from
Costco (fka Price Club) I'd had in my garage since not long
after high school, and which I hadn't ridden in many, many
years. I figured if I could ride 14 miles off the couch, as we
cyclists like to say, then perhaps this is the sport for me. That
was in 2005 and it turned out to be true - - I've logged as few
as 578 miles one year and as many as 3685 in 2013!
In my experience there are only a few things that beat the
feeling of riding down PCH with the ocean in view, the sun
warming your back and the cool breeze brushing your face. It
is one of the quintessential experiences of a So Cal cyclist.
In 2012 I signed up my wife and me for the epic Cycle Oregon.
For several years I'd dreamed about joining that ride and
cycling the countryside of my favorite state in the US. The
day I received an email announcing the opening of early
registration for the 25th Anniversary Cycle Oregon ride I asked
myself, What are you waiting for? We would have the chance
to not only ride 500 miles with 31,000' of elevation gain over a
week's worth of cycling, but would ride up to (and around if in
need of further punishment) the gorgeous Crater Lake!
It was during Cycle Oregon that I had what isn't an experience
many So Cal cyclists have.
We woke up in Prospect, Oregon on Day 4, thinking about
the 75.7 mile ride ahead of us, up and over big mountains,

enduring an 5100' elevation gain, through the gorgeously
green Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest and into
Ashland. Awaiting our arrival would be the rewards of
cold beer, BBQ, a rest day and the Shakespeare Festival.
Imagine our surprise upon exiting our tent (OH, have I
mentioned that we were camping?) and discovering ICE
on our bikes! Yes, that cold, frozen, white stuff! It was 28
degrees out there!
We braved the frigid temps, walked our bikes across camp in
search of hot coffee, oatmeal, hard boiled eggs and an extra
bagel to stash in our pockets. Around one bend in the road
was a view that made climbing out of a warm sleeping bag
and into sub-freezing weather worth it. . . steam rising from an
alpine lake as the early morning sun reflected off the water.
As the day wore on we climbed and we climbed and we
climbed - they weren't kidding about gaining 5k' of elevation in
one day. As we climbed, the temperature climbed. 70°. 80°.
90°. Finally, the temperature topped out at 99°.
Feeling awfully close to heat exhaustion, I babbled aloud to
nobody in particular, Exactly why was this ride on my bucket
list anyway?
I'll tell you why. The sense of accomplishment that follows
completing an epic ride. That and views like this are what
memories are made of:
