Leadership Exchange - Spring 2017 - 51

"GLA ALA Member Spotlight..."

KIM ROBINSON
Human Resources Section Co-Chair 2017-2018
How long have you been an administrator?

25+ years
What career or profession, other than your own, have you always wanted to try?
I always did well in speaking and writing - and even wrote for my school
paper and was on the Journalism team. In college, I was an English major
and thought about becoming a TV news anchor/broadcaster. After graduating, I fell into HR and discovered a huge passion for the law. I absolutely
LOVE what I do! If I could start my life over, I probably would have gone to
law school to become an employment lawyer. However, when I retire, I want
to open a restaurant that features live jazz performances, and serves good
'ol fashioned southern dishes created with my personal recipes.

IMPORTANT STATS:
Administrator at
LAUP

What advice would you give someone entering the legal administrator field?
My advice would be to join the ALA and GLAALA so they can take advantage of all the learning and networking opportunities! I would also tell them
that there is never a dull moment - but wouldn't trade it for anything!
Share an interesting "tidbit" about yourself that most people would not know:
I come from a musical family, and I moonlight as a singer.
I host Thanksgiving for approximately 45+ people every year. I do all the
cooking. From scratch. All myself. Yes, for real.

Administrator for 20+ years
Member since 2011

The best advice I received from a fellow legal administrator was:
"Always double-check that 'to' box before you hit that 'send' button".

My style is one
that is inclusive,
supportive, and
encouraging.

Describe yourself in three words:
Loyal, motivated, and organized.

To be successful, legal administrators have to:
They have to be knowledgeable. They have to be patient. They also have to
be flexible because we play many roles; often different roles on the same workday.
In my spare time I like to:
I enjoy spending time with my family - especially my two boys, Steven and Christopher; and my three grandchildren, Kiara, Jeremiah, and Micah. I also love to cook and often host events at my home.
Activities (other than work) I am involved in:
I work in the community advising and counseling through workshops and seminars regarding career goals
(resume building, interview skills, etc.). As a community leader, I help people to understand voter rights and
register to vote. I am also a worship leader in my church.
Describe your management style and why it works for you.
My style is one that is inclusive, supportive, and encouraging. I keep my door open. I listen before I respond.
I encourage everyone to give their best on the job, be proud of their accomplishments, and enjoy life. Dance.
Sing. Laugh. A happy employee makes a productive employee.
