2011 ANNUAL CONFERENCE RECAP—ORLANDO Susan Bonner, Office Administrator Liebert Cassidy Whitmore This year’s annual conference was held in Orlando, Florida, May 22-25, and included a number of welcome changes. The educational content was elevated and very relevant. ALA’s new Executive Director, Larry Smith, and the Conference Team moved the organization forward with this year’s offering. Some conference events were consolidated to allow the Business Partners more opportunities to show their appreciation to ALA members which was a nice change for all. I found programs that addressed our changing environment and which were timely. For instance, in my firm I do Request for Proposals (RFP’s) for the public agencies who are searching for legal services. The program I attended on this subject “RFP’s Responding for Profit” had plenty of directly related content, gave me some new ideas and also let me know our firm was on track. With social media increasing in scrutiny, especially with its legal ramifications, (think Anthony Weiner, which was breaking news at the time of the conference), the program, “Technology for the New Generation of Professionals” was highly relevant. The field is rapidly expanding and the impacts of its use are important in all our firms. This year ALA also incorporated vendor presentations into the daily schedule. These were not held in the vendor hall but in the same meeting rooms as the regular sessions. I attended two that were very informative for me as they were on programs that our Firm was considering adding to our daily operations. The presentations were a half hour in length and gave us the opportunity to see the product in action and to ask questions about it. These presentations were very well received. Don’t forget that you can view the educational handouts on the ALA official website by going to Meetings & Events, Annual Conference and then you can click on Session Handouts. Look for the article by Executive Board member Jason Santiago in this issue on his first conference experience. The Chapter Awards were held Sunday night before the conference opening. The Golden Gate Chapter submitted for our Public Speaking Workshops, and for an Education submission that tied all of our educational sessions and offerings into the theme of economic downturn. Both received Honorable Mention citations. Susan Bonner receives an award! The Golden Gate Chapter also submitted for Chapter Website and was awarded Third Place for our outstanding new website! We received our Platinum Award as one of the best chapters in the Association. The Chapter decided to incorporate the SF Giants World Championship with the ALA by wearing black T-shirts with Golden Gate in orange and white letters, with orange boas tipped with black feathers. There were almost 20 chapter members at the conference and we showed our “colors” at the awards. Be sure to catch the pictures of us enjoying the Awards Ceremony! Next year’s annual conference in Hawaii is one to plan for now. If you register early, before August 31 st, there is a substantial reduction, $400, off the registration fee and $200 off the early bird price, so put that on your agenda for approval soon. And, coming up soon, is the Region 6 Conference October 20-22, 2011. I went to my first regional conference two years ago when it was here in the Bay Area and I was really impressed with the classes, business partner contacts and the Association representatives who attended. Try to attend, as it promises to be filled with great programs and will be held at the newest hotel in Las Vegas, the Cosmopolitan.
