The Bridge - November 2011 - (Page 16)

Our Community Challenge month has ended and it was a great success. This year Chapter members, families, friends and Business Partners, participated in five different events. On September 18, the Stepping Toward the Cure Triple Negative Breast Cancer Walk in Oakland saw five volunteers take up the challenge for the Chapter. The walk was a great success raising $25,000 and our own Kim Coates was top fundraiser with $925. On Sunday, October 2, the Breast Cancer Peak Hike took place on Mt. Tamalpais. Team ALA had 11 hikers and raised $3273!! For the past 15 years, Breast Cancer Fund supporters have taken one step at a time for prevention at Peak Hike. The event raises money to support the work to eliminate the environmental causes of the disease, and also brings together teams of family and friends who want to honor loved ones touched by breast cancer. On October 4, four Chapter volunteers helped serve breakfast to San Francisco seniors at the Curry Senior Center on Turk Street here in the city. This fantastic organization serves hundreds of seniors breakfast and lunch every day. The CSC also provides primary care through the CSC medical clinic and home visits to clients. They also provide services in substance abuse counseling, social and educational opportunities in addition to the breakfast and lunch served daily. On the evening of October 11 we had 18 volunteers show up at the San Francisco Food Bank. This fantastic crew sorted 11,880 cans of fruit that will be used for the AM PM Snack Program for middle schools in the city. Again on Saturday morning, October 15, we had five more volunteers show up at the San Francisco Food Bank. They worked on the team which put together a total of 1491 individual boxes of food for seniors through the San Francisco area. On October 20th, 6 volunteers met Walk event.
