The Bridge - September 2013 - (Page 2)

From the Editors What comes to mind when you think of being a member of ALA? Is it the resources available to us? Or the people we can glean information from? Or is it the opportunity to keep up on current information through webinars and events? Certainly, these are all important benefits. However, beyond all of these benefits are the friendships, the camaraderie, and the people you can turn to for support and encouragement – and let us not forget the occasional social hour where we can raise a glass to one another and to our business partners. Editor: Being an administrator of a law firm often brings one to the realization that there really is no “peer group” at the office. You work with the firm’s partners and managing partners—but they are not your peers. You work with attorneys—but they are not your peers. You also work with the support staff—but they are also not your peers. ALA is where you go to find your peer group. ALA is where you go to find answers to the problems you encounter during the day. ALA is where you go to share a story and a laugh with someone who will totally “get it.” Linda Republicano Co-Designers: Diane Miller Merrilee Gates Design & Production Diane Miller/King & Spalding Merrilee Gates/Carroll, Burdick & McDonough LLP eLawMarketing Preparation of Material Submissions are due on fifteenth of the month for the following month’s issue. Since “Membership” is the theme, we have decided to profile a few different ALA members: First, meet Garry -- one of our new members who, while new to the world of law firm administration, is not new to the law firm. Next, meet Kim --one of our long-time members who recently returned to ALA - Golden Gate Chapter upon moving back to the Bay Area. Finally, meet Matt -- one of our new business partners at ALA. They are just a sprinkling of the people who make up our organization. Each and every member contributes his or her unique self which, when combined with other members of group make up our ALAGolden Gate Chapter. Membership in this organization, especially in this Chapter, makes each of us better at our jobs. As the saying goes, “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts”. In order to not make this issue too “People Magazine-like” we have also included a few articles that are meant to edify the readership. I trust you will find these articles current and relevant to your daily encounters at your respective firms. In this issue you will also find an order form for the salary survey. Please remember to calendar the dates for the upcoming events, including community outreach for the food bank; Light the Night walk in Golden Gate Park for the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society; Business Partner Appreciation Reception at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel; and, of course, the 2013 ALA Region 6 Conference and Expo in Reno. Details about these events are included in this month’s edition of our newsletter. I hope you find this issue both informative and fun as you get to know some of our members. Happy Reading!
