Blacksheep Nightclub VISION: Past Meets Present

When Tim Mutton, principal at Londonbased Blacksheep, rst met Paul, their mutual respect was instant. “Priya is a design connoisseur who is leaps and bounds above anyone else out there. She loved our design of the Whisky Mist nightclub in the London Hilton,” Mutton recalls. Soon after, Paul tapped Blacksheep to spin its magic on the Hyderabad hotel’s nightclub. Paul’s directive was simple: Make the design relevant to Hyderabad and source locally whenever possible. “We used the concept of craftsmanship and manipulated what the city was about historically (think precious stone production as in the famed Nizam jewels) and where it’s going (as a technology center). Then we combined the two,” Mutton says. The rm took cues from the building’s architecture and site—its jewel-like skin, uid form—to create an organic, modern space that leans heavily on local manufacturers. For example, pendant lights are futuristic in form but handcrafted in India. LED lighting and bold graphic colors— black and gold in the main area and red and purple in the VIP space—recall bangles from a local bazaar. Mutton says, “I couldn’t see what other designers were doing, but Priya knows great design and she trusted us. She had to—and that’s what made this project such a huge success.”
