the hotel to use the warmth of the waste shower water to pre-heat the fresh shower water that goes to the guest rooms. Solar panels on the roof also provide energy to heat the new shower water. The system has worked quite well, Syvertsen says. “Our gas water heaters have not had to be activated.” Another interesting design feature Koucká implemented was what she calls her “sofa snake.” “For a long time, we were unhappy with the space plan of the entrance floor because it was divided into a lot of small units,” she says. Even though the team got the go-ahead to change to a more open layout, the original concrete construction of the building still left limitations. “We needed to unite it more, so we came up with the idea of the sofa as the joining element.” It’s a long, winding sofa that joins the reception area with the restaurant, hall and theater. This was another element the designers felt would encourage communication between the hotel’s guests; people could sit and talk with their friends on one side of the sofa, but just as easily, they could turn and speak with people on the other side. The addition of Belushi’s Bar late in the project brought new issues. The highenergy bar already had an edgy design style established in its other locations, one that didn’t quite jibe with the upscale, green vibe of Mosaic House. In the end, compromises were made on both sides so that Belushi’s Prague would fit into the project design. A high mix of seating concentrates stylized chairs and geometric tables in the middle of the bar, while a low, upholstered banquette edges its way around the perimeter. “It’s certainly the most designconscious Belushi’s that exists to date, but it still possesses a ‘heart and soul,’” says Syvertsen. Despite the challenges, Koucká says that working with the Mosaic House team and the Swiss ecological specialists was a pleasure. And as for how she made the space so inviting, she says, “This is the essence of an interior architect’s work. I don’t know ‘how’ to do it. I just follow my feelings.” BD
