n recent weeks, I’ve had the pleasure of overseeing the Boutique Design Awards program for a second time and attending the second annual Boutique Design New York interiors trade fair. In both instances, I was exhilarated and inspired by the creativity of the participants. I hope that holds true for you, as you take in our coverage of the same. First up, on page 8, is our review of the most recent BDNY, which was held in November in the Javits Center North. That show delivered on its promise of providing attendees with a carefully curated selection of new products, all offered up in small-scale displays that engendered one-to-one connections. Just as impressive are the winners in this year’s Boutique Design Awards. Our coverage of that competition kicks off with a profile of Designer of the Year Lauren Rottet (page 20), a true industry pioneer whose accolades include being the first woman to be elevated to Fellow by both the American Institute of Architects and the International Interior Design Association. Then, starting on page 24, we cover the 12 spectacular winning projects in the year’s competition, an all-star roster that includes the Dream Downtown, the Waldorf Astoria Shanghai, the Hard Rock Hotel Punta Cana and the Yotel New York. To help pick those winners, we recruited three experienced designers to sift through the 100 or so entries we received. My thanks to Tandem’s Kim Daoust, Lam Architectural Design’s Eric Lam and Slick+Designusa’s Rocco Laudizio for assisting BD’s editors in selecting the best of the best in this year’s competition. Want to know more about those judges? Then turn to page 7, where we offer miniprofiles of that trio in a new department titled In this Issue. You can look for that feature going forward, as another way in which we offer insights into the creative designers behind all the great projects we write about. Speaking of new features, turn to page 6 to see a listing of the participants in our justcreated Editorial Advisory Board. That group consists of 14 representatives from such high-profile firms as Four Seasons, HBA, Kimpton, Morgans and Rockwell Group, all of whom have agreed to help keep Boutique Design abreast of all the latest trends and developments impacting our readers. And that’s not all. As the year unfolds, we’ll roll out several other new features, including Sector Spotlights (highlighting the latest trends in restaurants, spas and resorts) and On the Boards (visuals of upcoming projects of note). I hope you find these additions to our editorial arsenal useful.
