entrances. Guy Rigby, vice president, food & beverage, for the Americas region at Four Seasons, says Café Boulud reflects the fact that today’s travelers want “welcoming, casual restaurant environments where sitting shoulder-to-shoulder with locals makes the experience even better.”

Originally used mainly by architects in creating building exteriors, Building Information Modeling (BIM) is having a growing impact on the interior design process, as well. The software creates 3D models of projects that can be continuously updated during their design and construction phases. Among the firms making heavy use of this technology is RTKL, the architectural, planning and interior design firm whose client base includes Mandarin Oriental and Ritz-Carlton. RTKL principal Douglas Palladino notes that BIM “gives clients a more accurate depiction of a project’s progression, while providing us with a platform for greater integration and communication among all the disciplines involved with that work.”

Broader Use for BIM

Youth hostels are pretty popular in Europe, but not so much in America, where the concept of sharing rooms with strangers hasn’t caught on in a big way. However, that may well be about to change. Yucaipa Cos. and the Sydell Group have formed a partnership to open premium youth hostels in several major U.S. cities. That venture is planning to spend $250 million to acquire and renovate as many as 10 low-cost hotels over the next two years. It plans to reposition them as high-end youth hostels in such cities as Miami Beach, New York, San Francisco, Washington and Los Angeles.

In 2010, the U.S. Justice Department issued revised ADA regulations, including updated “standards for accessible design” that become mandatory on March 15 of this year. KlingStubbins’ Marc Fischer says two aspects of the new guidelines are getting the most attention from his firm. “One is the augmented rules concerning single-user toilet room clearances, which are changing the shape of support spaces,” says Fischer, director of quality assurance, national interiors, at the Philadelphia-based architecture/design/engineering firm. “Second is the new approach for element also contributing to function and calculating the number of required accesprofitability,” he says.
