Similarly, designers at Gettys’ Hong Kong of ce are upping the appeal of underused spa real estate by incorporating hot, medium and cool immersion pools into the locker rooms. While the changing areas for such facilities have to be a lot bigger than usual, there’s no need for separate pool areas and pool decks, says Ariane Steinbeck, the of ce’s managing director and principal. Even transitional areas, such as corridors, can house marketable services. Gustin Tan, interior design partner at BBG-BBGM in New York, sees possibilities for adding a Kniepp walk between therapy rooms, so that guests can continue their spa journey as they massage their soles on these round stones covered with a shallow stream. Multitasking spaces also give smaller hotel spas a way to match design to opportunity. “Today, we nd separate men’s treatment areas to be a luxury,” says Jeanie Klueter, WATG’s director of Spa + Wellness Design. “But if the space is versatile, it can be advertised as a VIP area and serve multiple purposes and, more importantly,

not sit vacant. To achieve that, the decor needs to be unisex in nature so guests don’t feel awkward.” Making sure male guests feel at home in the spa spaces means nding a common design language between the feminine style often associated with spas and the men and women who use them. Natural wood and stone say “masculine” just as articulately as they say “luxe.” Metallic nishes continue to be popular for the same reason. Klueter likes using chairs and ottomans as the main seating options. They look comfortable enough to enhance a relaxation room setting, residential enough for a gathering space and functional enough to accommodate increasingly popular foot massages. Achieving this level of exibility is pressuring designers to look for new materials and different installation options. Champalimaud’s Kastl points out that, while spas are still often focused on emulating natural worlds, man-made products are sometimes necessary to stand up to the extremes of temperatures in new treatments, as well as humidity, staining from aromatic oils
