Wyndham says conceptual interior and exterior designs—which
include splashes of the brand’s
signature orange—will be tested
at select locations throughout the
U.S., tentatively by the end of 2014.
After plans are finalized, the brand
anticipates that U.S. franchisees will
have the opportunity to join the new
Howard Johnson portfolio as early
as 2015, provided their properties
have completed the necessary
improvements. The company also
says a new construction prototype
will be available in coming years.
The reinvigoration process will
also involve phasing out the Howard
Johnson Inn, Howard Johnson Express Inn and Howard Johnson Plaza
flags over the course of several years,
Wyndham says.
Three sister brands are also getting
a makeover. Microtel’s new prototype
features more communal work space
in the lobby, a Micro mart, a flex room
for meetings and a new look for guest
rooms. Days Inn is targeting healthconscious road warriors with a newconcept fitness space. Travelodge’s
new lobby and guest room designs
focus on natural woods, sandstone
flooring and seasonal colors.

Wyndham Hotel Group has unveiled
early details and designs for reinvigorating its venerable Howard Johnson
brand. That effort will involve updating the flag’s properties with a look
that is “clean, fresh, fun and timeless,”
as well as modern and playful, the
hotelier says.
“Howard Johnson is a brand that,
for millions of travelers, conjures fond
memories of ice cream cones and
family vacations. It’s a name that
carries with it incredible equity,” said
Eric Danziger, the hotelier’s president
and ceo, in announcing the plans for
the brand at Wyndham Hotel Group’s
2013 Global Conference in Las Vegas.
“Reinvigoration is about growing the
brand and restoring it to its rightful
place within the industry by inspiring that same type of brand loyalty
and affinity from a new generation
of consumers.”
