Thompson, Novotel and Trump heighten their market profiles
with a new trio of design-forward hotels.

CHICAGO HAS RECENTLY BEEN THE SCENE of several top-tier hotel
openings, including Ian Schrager’s PUBLIC hotel, the Radisson Blu Aqua
Hotel and the latest Langham locale. To help its newest lifestyle property
make a splash in that market, Thompson Hotels tapped British design firm
Tara Bernerd & Partners to create the interiors of the Thompson Chicago.
Founder Tara Bernerd says she used strong textures and bold colors in the
hotel to create an environment that’s “sophisticated, yet still raw and edgy.”
Similarly, in New York, the owners of the Novotel Times Square wanted
that hotel to better stand out from the crowd (and more fully reflect its status
as the Accor brand’s North American flagship) by tapping into the energy of its
high-profile environs. Hired to accomplish that goal was Stonehill & Taylor,
which incorporated motifs related to celebrations and the passage of time
to reference Times Square’s world-famous New Year’s celebration.
Then there’s Donald Trump, who landed the contract from Uncle Sam
to convert the Old Post Office in Washington, D.C., into what he unabashedly
describes as “one of the finest hotels anywhere in the world.” In pursuit of that
goal, Trump and his offspring brought in a high-profile cadre of designers that
includes Hirsch Bedner Associates (HBA). That team recently offered up a
first glimpse of what the hotel will look like when it opens in 2015. The design,
notes Ivanka Trump, “draws on the legacy and integrity of this great landmark,
but is executed in a thoroughly modern way.”
