NOVOTEL TIMES SQUARE

NOVOTEL , Accor’s international
midscale brand, has roughly 400
locations in 60 countries. But those
stats include just one U.S. locale: the
Novotel Times Square in New York.
That hotel, at 52nd Street and
Broadway, changed hands early
last year, when it was acquired from
Accor by the Chartres Lodging Group
LLC. (Accor continues to manage
the 480-key property.) The new
owners hired hospitality design firm
Stonehill & Taylor to undertake a
just-completed renovation inspired
by its world-famous address.

Taylor’s principal and vice president
of interior design, says his team
endeavored to inject the hotel’s public
spaces and guest rooms with a design
“that’s inspired by the celebration
of renewal—a reference to Times
Square’s pop-culture significance as
the host of New Year’s Eve activities—
incorporating architecture, video, and
light effects to create an immersive
experience for the visitor.”
That motif begins at the hotel’s
street-level arrival area, where
designers created an LED wall and
ceiling installation that’s reminiscent
of the Times Square ball drop and
pulses with a variety of colors and
lights throughout the day. A digital
countdown clock is projected on the
wall as a reference to the passage
of time.
Moving up to the 7th floor reception and lobby area, visitors
encounter more eye-catching allusions to passing time. The reception
area design was inspired by an image
of a shattered version of the Times
Square ball, with lines and facets that
continue through the lobby lounge

and converge at a column of light
behind the circular bar—the visual
center of the lobby—as a reference
to the sun. Also in the lobby lounge,
floor-to-ceiling video art pieces represent New Year’s Eve rituals around
the world.
A nod to new beginnings
is also found in the guest rooms,
in elements such as custom “firework” graphics on the headboards,
window treatments and decorative
pillows. In addition, to boost the
rooms’ luxe factor, designers incorporated such features as custom
artwork and real wood veneers.
Barry Nidiffer, Chartres Lodging’s
executive vice president of development management, says the owners
are pleased with the Novotel’s new
look. “Stonehill & Taylor created a
well-organized and comprehensive
concept for the design that is both
bold and full of energy—just like
Times Square itself,” he says.
