Heat—this time the thermal
kind—will serve as the central
attraction of the Gainsborough Bath
Spa that’s slated to open next year in
Bath, England. That YTL Classic
Hotel property will be based in two,
interconnected 17th century buildings. Originally home to a hospital
that tapped the site’s renowned
thermal waters for healing therapies,
the locale more recently served as a
technical college.

YTL’s plans involve creating
a 99-key luxury hotel at the site,
along with the Spa Village Bath
complex. That two-level, 14,000sq.-ft. wellness site will include
an apothecary; natural thermal
water pools; ice chamber; sauna
and infrared sauna; steam room;
movement studio; fitness center;
11 treatment rooms; and three
spa suites.
“Our underlying goal for the
spa is to celebrate the healing traditions of Bath in a fresh way,” says Jon
Kastl, a principal at Champalimaud,
which has been commissioned to
create the interiors throughout
the YTL property.
That approach is reflected in the
design of the spa’s main pool, which
will be sited in a glass-ceilinged
atrium that bathes the space in
natural light. In addition, one side
of the pool will showcase largescale metallic geometric lanterns
that are suspended above three
curved niches. Those niches will be
lined with custom mosaic tiles and
benches equipped with water jets.
“The result is an experience that’s
timeless, but with a modern edge,”
says Kastl.
