THE BUZZ
2,100 BOTTLES OF
BOOZE ON THE WALLS
At the new private dining room and bar at
The Smith East Village restaurant in New
York, design studio nemaworkshop sought
to create a unique visual experience by
bringing the most important aspect of the
back-bar to the forefront: the liquor bottles.
Metal-tube shelving on the walls above the
banquettes houses roughly 2,100 bottles of
booze. That close proximity to the liquor
is meant to make patrons of the 1,000-sq.ft. space feel like insiders, merely an arm's
length away from pouring themselves
another round, the designers say.
Personality Hotels, the pioneering boutique collection based in
San Francisco, recently completed renovations at two properties
in its home city: The Steinhart Hotel and Hotel Union Square. Both
updates were by Jonathan Rachman, principal at locally based Jonathan Rachman Design.
Yvonne Lembi-Detert, founder, ceo and president of the fourmember San Francisco boutique collection, recalls how Rachman
landed the renovations. "I met Jonathan at the SF Designers Showcase two years ago in his showroom, and our personalities meshed
right from the start. Loving his design, I welcomed him to bring his
style into my home, and knew upon the completion of his work that
I wanted him to bring that unique vision to both Hotel Union Square
and The Steinhart Hotel renovations."
The updates at The Steinhart Hotel centered on the re-design of
15 guest suites (top photo), which now feature a classic Parisian feel,
thanks to their neutral color palette with hints of muted aubergine,
mink and taupe. Counterbalancing that Old World vibe is custom
artwork by Rachman's firm, including abstract representations of
Ignus Steinhart, the San Francisco banker and benefactor who
opened the building housing the hotel bearing his name in 1910.
At Hotel Union Square, Rachman's updates to the lobby (bottom
photo) and penthouse suites again drew inspiration from the Continent, this time from London's Mayfair-Marylebone district. The new
look at this locale includes a color palette of blacks, whites, grays
and silvers, along with such materials as carrera marble, mohair,
leather and alabaster.
The result of Rachman's efforts is the creation of spaces that
Lembi-Detert says reflect her belief that "a boutique hotel stay
should be treated as a home-away-from-home experience."
