It's not just the
furniture that
has a modular,

ters. Having spent his fair share of nights on
the road, Dardenne had become a fan of the
whole boutique hotel experience, from the
style to the service. It was clear there was a
burgeoning market of like-minded travelers
coming to Namur, only to be disappointed
with its fairly staid hospitality offer. "I started
to dream about owning a small hotel in
Namur," says the 45-year-old entrepreneur.
In what friends say is a typical progression, his plan started small: a six-room B&B.
Just as characteristically, that seed quickly
blossomed into an 18-room hotel when
Dardenne found a pair of riverside houses
for sale on prime real estate within walking
distance of the Citadel of Namur, a 17th
century fortress with roots in the Roman
era. Connecting Point A to Point B would
have been challenge enough for most firsttime hotel owners, but when a third adjacent building became available, Dardenne
couldn't say no to a Point C. With that
purchase came the addition of 12 rooms and
a more elegant entry.
Everything was on track-until opportu-
nity knocked again. Six months prior to the
opening of The Royal Snail (more shortly on
how the hotel got its unusual name), a
fourth neighboring building went on the
block. Acquisition of that structure not only
expanded the footprint, it opened up a new
market by providing space for a suite of
conference rooms, a wellness center and a
fitness facility. "It really gave us some room
to breathe on the ground floor," he says.
Dardenne knew the designers he chose
would have to juggle a lot of disparate
elements-from unifying four structures to
bringing equal style and comfort to guest
rooms with a variety of bay sizes and ceiling
heights. But, for the brief, he left no guesswork as to how he wanted to bring continuity
and design punch to this patchwork of givens.
"The Royal Snail's design had to reflect its
locale in every way, past and present, myth
and reality, from the adoption of Namur's
symbol-the snail-in its branding and
motifs to playing up the influence of local
artists such as Félicien Rop [whose paintings
hang in the restaurant]," he says.
