Contract and Royal Custom Designs, was held
at Hard Rock Hotel San Diego's 207 lounge.
Another highly anticipated event was the
NEWH Icon of Industry and Power Players:
Women Leaders in Hospitality annual breakfast and panel discussion, co-sponsored by
Boutique Design and NEWH. At that session,
NEWH honored the late Ray Anderson of
Interface Inc. as its 2013 ICON of Industry
honoree, and introduced Signature Hospitality
Carpets' Bob Thomas as the 2014 honoree.
In addition, the Fabricut FR-1 Scholarship
was presented to Melanie Murata, a master's
student at Florida State University's Department of Interior Design.
The event's panel discussion featured 10
female thought leaders discussing their paths
to success, the challenges and opportunities
of workplace diversity and industry trends for
2014 and beyond. Participants included: Amy
Jakubowski, Puccini Group; Barbara Lazaroff,
Imaginings Interior Design/Spago, Chinois,
CUT & WP Fine Dining, Catering & Worldwide;
Deborah Lloyd Forrest, Forrest Perkins; Jennifer
Johanson, EDG Interior Architecture + Design;
JoAnna Abrams, Mindclick; Joyce Romanoff,
Maya Romanoff; Kristin Kahle, Neo-Metro; Leigh
Hitz, Stout Street Hospitality/Magnolia Hotels;
and Randa Tukan, HOK.

23 offering insights at the "Mexico: What's Putting the Sizzle
in Projects South of the Border" panel discussion were Leo
Eskenazi, Hilton Worldwide; Sandra Benitez, Design Atelier;
Daniel Welborn, The Gettys Group; Kajsa Krause, Krause
+ Sawyer; and Meghann Day, HBA; 24 BDwest's panel
discussions drew large crowds; also popular were the three
Designed Spaces created specifically for the trade fair: 25
the Luxury Lounge, designed by Wilson Associates; 26
the "Shh"...ades Bar, by Design Poole; and 27 The Pub at
BDwest by Stonehill & Taylor;

On the exhibit floor, trade fair attendees were
invited to relax and recharge in three Designed
Spaces created by leading firms in the hospitality realm: The Pub at BDwest, designed by
Michael Suomi and the Stonehill & Taylor
team; the Luxury Lounge, designed by May
Poon and the Wilson Associates team; and
the "Shh"...ades Bar by Trisha Poole and the
Design Poole team.
Visitors could also experience the luxe
Spa-Tacular Guest Bathroom, a 2014 BDwest
Competition Winner by Jennifer Kleen of
FODA Design. The Spa-Tacular and Designed
Spaces were created using products provided
by BDwest exhibitors/sponsors.
Clearly, BDwest offered up a couple of jampacked days and nights. And we're already hard
at work to make sure next year's version, to be
held again at the Sails Pavilion on April 8-9, 2015,
will offer up more of the same-and then some!
In addition, be sure to check out BDwest's
sister show, BDNY, which will have its fifth
run this year on Nov. 9-10, at the Javits
Convention Center.
