Why are these people above smiling? The staff of Amsterdambased Concrete Architectural Associates has a lot to be happy about.
Not only do they get the fun of stretching their creative muscles on
groundbreaking projects such as citizenM Times Square in New York
and the W Hotel Verbier, Switzerland, (both are finalists in this year's
Best Lobby-Luxury category for the Gold Key Award for Excellence in
Hospitality Design), they also are celebrating their honor as the 2014
Gold Key Designer of the Year.
Attendees of this year's Gold Key Awards Gala will get the chance to
meet Rob Wagemans, Concrete's founder and creative director, and
members of his team, as well as the winners and finalists in all 19 of the
Gold Key categories during a gala to be held 6:30-10 pm, Monday, Nov. 10
at the Mandarin Oriental, New York. Capping off the two days of the
Boutique Design New York (BDNY) Trade Fair and Conference, this
special dinner event brings together leading players from all sectors in the
design community to celebrate the industry's most prestigious design
award-and the people and projects whose creativity distinguishes them
as the best of the best.
Inspiration is a major reason 5,000 industry professionals will
gather Nov. 9-10 at New York's Javits Convention Center for the fifth
annual BDNY. This year's conversational panel format offers attendees
more opportunities to engage with leading hoteliers, designers, architects and developers as they show and tell how they made design
magic for hotels, restaurants and spas. There's food for thought on
topics ranging from wellness-conscious hotels to restaurants with

retail components; from what's "New in New York" to what's important
when doing business in the Middle East; and what's on the minds of
women thought leaders, experts in sustainability taking part in two
NEWH Green Voices sessions and millennials who will be both the
design decision-makers and travel consumers of the future.
This year, there's also an expanded conversation with clients
throughout the programming. From 3-4 pm Sunday, Nov. 9, moderator
Jeff Higley, vice president communications & digital media/editorial
director, Hotel News Now/STR, and lifestyle leaders Brad Wilson, president, Ace Hotel; Josh Wyatt, chief strategic officer, Generator Hostels;
and Ingo Schweder, founder and ceo, GOCO Hospitality will analyze the
trends ahead and how they will influence interiors in 2015 and beyond.
The impact of millennials' preferences (and those of all who think
like them) will be under the microscope during the Brand Central
session scheduled for 10:30-11:30 am Monday, Nov. 10. Joining that
discussion will be Edwin Hendriksen, senior vice president, investment
and development, citizenM; Ted Jacobs, vice president of brand design,
W Hotels, St. Regis, Starwood Hotels and Resorts; Carl Michel, executive chairman, Generator Hostels; and Larry Traxler, senior vice president-global design services, Hilton Worldwide. The tone turns more
casual during the BD/International Society of Hospitality Purchasers'
Owners Grill, slated for noon to 1 pm Monday, Nov. 10, when a panel of
hospitality executives faces a quick-fire challenge of questions ranging
from their views on the next hot design direction to operational pet
peeves and blue sky ideas for next-generation properties. 
