Virgin Hotels
Virgin, of course, is not a new brand. In the 45 years since Branson
slapped the V-word on his first enterprise-a mail-order record
company-the brash British entrepreneur has made his presence felt
in a variety of industries, including travel and leisure. But while he
has operated a select number of luxury resorts for some time now,
Branson just became a virgin no more in the hotel business early this
year. Five years since first unveiling plans for Virgin Hotels, he finally
took the wraps off that brand's first locale in mid-January, in a former
bank building in Chicago's Loop.
"It's been a long-held dream of mine to start beautiful, comfortable, fun hotels for guests and give them what they want and need
while being gentle on their wallets," says Branson.
The initial iteration of that approach is now on display inside the
former Old Dearborn Bank, where the hotel's interior designers-
which consisted of an in-house team and Rockwell Group Europe-
kept some of the original building's signature elements intact,
including a 1920s oak cigar bar that serves as the hotel's front desk,
brass elevator doors and the original mail slot and chute.
Beyond those nods to the past, the designers sought to put a
distinctive, modern spin on the hotel's public spaces and guest
rooms. The original bank floor, for example, is now home to The
Commons Club, a gleaming, two-story public space for dining,
drinking, working and mingling. The centerpiece of that space is an
