KEEPING CONNECTED
WITH THE BOUTIQUE 18
SINCE ITS LAUNCH a decade ago, our

Boutique 18 program has recognized 162
up-and-coming hospitality designers. All
those honorees had their moment in the spotlight, in the form of profiles that appeared in
the pages of this magazine and at an induction ceremony that's been held in most recent
years at BDwest, our West Coast trade fair
and conference. That tended to be the end of
it, at least in terms of coverage in the magazine (save for the occasional mention of a B18
honoree who took part in one of the projects
we profiled).
That's about to change, starting with this
issue. In celebration of Boutique Design's 10th
anniversary, we've reached out to representatives from each of the first nine B18 classes
to see where they're at now and what they've
been up to (see "Rising Stars Revisited," page
40). There you'll find that some have stayed
with the same employer, moving up the
internal ladder, while others have moved on
to different firms and wider responsibilities.
In addition, several have been bitten by the
entrepreneurial bug and launched firms of
their own.
Beyond updating their career status, we
asked those profiled three basic questions:
what changes they've seen in the design field
since being named honorees, how being
named to the B18 impacted their careers, and
what they're working on now. I found their
answers to be quite insightful, especially when
it comes to articulating the changes taking
place in the industry.

For example, The Gettys Group's Ben
Nicholas (a B18 alum from 2006, the program's
first year) notes that there are now "so many
high-tech tools apps and technological innovations that make our jobs easier, make inspiration easier to find and put resources that
previously would have been out of reach right
at our fingertips." And, echoing a sentiment
shared by several other respondents, Chelsea
Hotels' Heather Maloney notes that there has
been a "terrific upswing" in the hospitality
industry since she was named to the B18 in
2010. "The real estate market is once again in a
boom phase, and the hotel industry is experiencing a resurgence in projects," Maloney says.
The feature containing those thoughts is
just the start of our ongoing outreach to the
B18. In coming months, we will offer updates
on other past honorees in The Buzz section
of the magazine. Meantime, the total roster
of B18 honorees will grow to 180 next month,
when the 10th class is unveiled. And like their
predecessors, they will be profiled in the
magazine (the April issue) and inducted (at
the third annual BDwest, which will take place
April 8-9 in San Diego). Beyond that, we will
work to keep you informed on the groundbreaking work they do in the future.
