MORPHOSIS CREATES MIRROR-CLAD
TOWER TO HOUSE SWISS HOTEL
Morphosis Architects and 7132 Ltd. have unveiled plans to house a new
luxury hotel in a mirror-clad tower in the Alps. Morphosis, a high-profile
architecture firm with offices in Los Angeles, New York and Shanghai, has
created what it describes as a "minimalist look" that will help the 82-story
hotel blend with the mountain landscape and existing resort campus in Vals,

"For the 7132 arrival center and hotel, the incredible setting demands
reducing materiality and presence in the design so that, as in all our
work, the connection to the site becomes paramount," says Thom Mayne,
Morphosis's founder and design principal. "As much as possible, the
hotel is a minimalist act that reiterates the site and offers to the viewer a
mirrored, refracted perspective of the landscape."
The hotel's design has been controversial in some circles. For example,
an architecture/design blog that ran on the website of The Guardian, a U.K.
newspaper, called the planned hotel "a gigantic mirror-clad middle finger
aimed at the region."
The Morphosis plan was the winner of an international competition
that 7132 launched last June, in which eight architectural practices
contended for the opportunity to design the hotel. As envisioned by
Morphosis, the hotel complex will be housed in three structures: a podium
linking the building with neighboring buildings; a cantilever with a
restaurant, café, spa and bar; and a 1,250-ft.-high transparent tower that
will house a sky bar, restaurant and 107 guest rooms.
The resort's ongoing development is the collaboration between the
complex's executive director Pius Truffer and 7132 founder Remo Stoffel. The
Vals-based group has owned and operated Therme Vals since 2012, when 7132
purchased the thermal baths and resort from the municipality it's based in.
Following the completion of the hotel, the 7132 resort will encompass
buildings by three Pritzker Prize winning architects, including the Therme
Vals spa designed by Swiss architect Peter Zumthor and Valser Path, which is
slated for completion in 2017 and designed by Japanese architect Tadao Ando.
