something from Column A and something from Column B. Forget about a visual melting
pot. Ted Jacobs, vice president of global design, W, St. Regis and The Luxury Collection,
Starwood Hotels & Resorts, was out to create a fondue of separate ingredients.
The site helped with that-the hotel occupies both the former KAS Bank and a former
telephone exchange (which are across the street from each other). "We highlighted the
individual personalities of each building," says Jacobs. Spare green rooms on the Bank
side? Check. Graphic red pillows and urban gray walls on the Exhchange side? Check.
Meet the newest approach to the art hotel-the art of provocation. So, maybe the
telephone wire-inspired copper pipe details in the Exchange side of the property won't
start a social media firestorm, but they are still traffic-stopping focal points.
And, like great artists, the visual challenge is more than just being a shock jock.
Smartly controversial design will still need to work in context. Jaggedly shaped
seating on the terrace is an easy fit with the brand's modernist tendencies and
forms a clever contrast with the intricacy of the architecture. Muted shades in the
lobby offer a different version of drama. In the guest rooms, moving the bathtub
toward the windows plays with perspective.
There's no one right way to break boundaries in 2016 and beyond, not even
within a single project. Shapes and color palettes give each building its own personality. Not that anyone's playing favorites, of course. 
