MKV DESIGN'S THIRD TIME THE CHARM
AT MYKANOS GRAND HOTEL
Early this year, MKV Design completed a refurbishment of the guest rooms
and library at the Mykonos Grand Hotel on the Greek isle contained in its
name. That marked the London-based firm's third time working on the
96-key property. Here, Maria Katsarou-Vafiadis, MKV's founder/managing
director, recounts how that three-peat came about.
HOW DID YOUR FIRM WIN THIS COMMISSION THE FIRST TIME AROUND?

This was back in 2000, and the owners were looking for a Greek designer
with an international background and flair. Having heard about our work,
they invited us to submit concept designs for the interior design of their
new-build hotel.
HOW DID THE THIRD TIME COME ABOUT?
MAKE THEN (AND WHY)?

By 2007 the hotel was due for a soft renovation, and our challenge was
enhance the guest experience in a way that would update the design but was
still in keeping with the original concept. So, we introduced carefully selected
elements that we felt would be particularly appreciated by the clientele, many
of whom are regulars, as well as adding a number of individually designed
luxury suites. In the guest rooms, the drapes, upholstery and paint were
updated to enhance the sense of comfort and sensuality; the lobby and bar
areas were refreshed; and the main pool area benefited from new pavilions
where guests could recline in style away from the midday heat.

PUCCINI GROUP UPDATES F&B AT
FAIRMONT EMPRESS HOTEL
The Fairmont Empress hotel has held court over the Inner Harbor at Victoria,
British Columbia, since 1908. Over the years, the high-profile, Edwardian-style
hotel has hosted its share of royalty, both the real kind (kings and queens
from England, the emperor and empress of Japan) and the Hollywood variety
(ranging from Rita Hayworth to Harrison Ford). So when Puccini Group
was tasked with rejuvenating the storied property's dining experiences for a
reopening later this spring, the design team led by chief creative officer Rob
Polacek knew it would have to artfully mix the old with the new.

By the time the hotel became 15 years old, competition amongst luxury
hotels in Mykonos had increased significantly. As the owners wanted to
keep up with the ever demanding clientele of the island, a full refurbishment
was required. As a result of our longstanding association with the client, we
were once again entrusted to manage a sensitive redesign of all the guest
rooms and library area. The guest rooms have been completely redone, with
the space divided into three interconnecting areas. There is now an open
bathroom that offers direct views to the sea, reconfigured to contain a wet
room with both a freestanding bathtub and generous walk-in shower, a
sleeping area in the middle of the room with an arched ceiling reminiscent of
the local architecture and, opening onto the balcony, a lounge area.

Group project designer Nicholas Caruso.
The designers' efforts centered around updating the restaurant and bar
(formerly the Empress Room), as well as its tea lobby, site of its famed Tea
at the Empress afternoon service. For the renovated restaurant/bar-whose
new name has not yet been revealed-the designers drew inspiration from
the space's heritage and the hotel's environs.
To that end, designers chose a hardwood floor reminiscent of the original
one found in the restaurant, and added strips of reflective metallic paint to the
coffered ceiling to give an added sense of depth. Two bars were also installed:
a central quartzite one accented with sculptural overhead lighting, and one in
back that features satin brass detailing and a collection of glass decanters. A
jewel-like host stand and leather banquettes complete the space.
In the tea room, Puccini Group worked within the existing architectural
framework to brighten the space. Using a color palette sourced from the original Empress tea service china, the space has been converted into a modern
Victorian parlor that offers guests views of the adjoining gardens.
This space also features a new central bar, with a jewel box-like effect and
built-in refrigerator. During the day, it is stocked with tea, macaroons and
other offerings, while at night it transforms into a champagne bar. The original chandeliers have been enhanced with new shades, while fabrics reminiscent of tweed and boucle play off the marquetry flooring.
Puccini Group also reupholstered the original tea tables with leather
insets complemented by rattan-backed chairs. Finally, references to Victoria's reputation as a "City of Gardens" abound, with lush plant installations
reflecting the property's exterior gardens.
