HAPPY ACCIDENTS
Glassmaker Tracy Glover draws on her rural-to-industrial
surroundings to create one-of-a-kind lighting sculptures
and decorative objects in her Rhode Island studio.

MANY CREATIVES launch businesses, but Tracy Glover built hers.
She first studied glassmaking at the Rhode Island School of Design
before receiving advanced training in a 13th century Belgian
convent's crystal factory, and later at the Pilchuck Glass School in
Washington state. From there, she went on to work with various
artists, all of whom had different perspectives on the craft. "I felt
ready to go out on my own after four years of working under
others. So my friends and I, all glassblowers, literally built Tracy
Glover Studios from scratch ourselves," Glover says. "We had just
the bare bones-the building-and, after work and on weekends,
we'd chop and weld to construct the kilns and install all of the
plumbing in the studio." Now, her sculptural pieces can be found in
hospitality environments internationally, ranging from The
Nantucket Hotel + Resort in Massachusetts to Westin hotels in
Hawaii and the Dominican Republic to the Bellagio hotel and
casino in Las Vegas.
WHAT DOES GLASSBLOWING OFFER THAT OTHER CREATIVE
OUTLETS DON'T?

Working with glass, you can't always control the results. The
opportunity to create with a medium that has an especially uncertain outcome leads to a lot of happy accidents.
TELL US ABOUT SOME OF YOUR MOST MEMORABLE PROJECTS.

A favorite project of mine was a recent one for the Naya restaurant
in Dubai. We created a 24-ft. glass wall made up of three panels of
jewel strands. We shipped 168 individually made, hand-blown glass
beads from Rhode Island to Dubai-and they all arrived safely!
WHAT LIGHTING TRENDS ARE YOU CHANNELING INTO YOUR
DESIGNS? ARE THERE ANY TRENDS YOU'D LIKE TO SEE MORPH
OR GET LOST?

Getting back to the roots of lighting; exposed bulbs, industrial
hardware and raw materials. I like the idea of mixing old with new,
which you'll find a lot in my new collection. I'd like to see artists
and designers continue to push boundaries when it comes to
using innovative lighting technologies in creative ways.

Being in nature influences my designs in so many ways. The route
along the river that I row at sunrise changes drastically from rural
to industrial. There's such a range of varied backdrops-in one
section I'm completely surrounded by nature until I come to the
rusty tankers and different hues of the ships and tugboats. The
way the light in the morning affects the colors makes them more
vivid. While I'm moving, I can sometimes see the bottom of the
river change as the light filters through the water. The currents
and eddies each have different effects when it comes to reflecting
and bending the sunlight. All of these visuals come to mind when
I'm designing. 
