BY CHRISTINA GREEN CATHEDRAL CUES These stained glass windows were sourced from a dismantled Depression-era cathedral and restored. Measuring about 6-ft. tall, they channel the suggestion of light coming in from the outside, but are actually illuminated by light boxes. SHOWSTOPPER LINEAR APPROACH To play up the cinematic vibe, Winter took a column design he'd seen in a 1930s movie theater and replicated it here. His firm scored the concrete pillars to mimic the appearance of carved cinder blocks, which were used extensively during that time. Choosing the venue's focal point was a no-brainer. Movies are projected onto an ultra-thin Venetian plaster wall, adding a level of graininess that recalls the canvas screens of yesteryear. Mounted on the opposite wall is a retrofitted vintage projector from the famed Vogue Theatre. SIT BACK IN TIME Reupholstered wood pews from a 1930s theater line the wall. The couches in front of them were crafted to reference a piece sourced from a house of the same era. 22 boutiquedesign.com MAY 2016 BUTT OUT Creating separation between standing and seating zones in one big room is key. "If you're at a 30-in. seat level and other people are walking, it's an awkward situation," explains Winter. "We jacked the stage up to get the seating higher, so walkers' butts weren't in seated guests' faces." The reclaimed lumber flooring was polished and cut for a richer look.http://www.boutiquedesign.com
