Art is a classic way to capture the essence of a city. What's fresh
about the latest offerings is that the cool kids are using it, not as
a gallery-style feature, but as an integral part of the design-think
of it as the accessories to the hotel's outfit. And, says Nic
Graham, director of the Alexandria, New South Wales-based
design firm bearing his name, art has another new role as a
marriage of aesthetics and practicality.
For the 69-key QT Bondi, the art collection works as the
common thread to meld surf culture and art deco influences
with the brand's fashion- and culture-centric DNA. A wall-sized
collage in the lobby provides a visual signboard for that, from an
iconoclastic surrealist portrait of Gandhi to abstract splatter
pieces that evoke Jackson Pollack. Keeping up that impact in the
design starts with in-your-face color choices like a bold-toned
color block rug in some of the guest rooms. Pillows with graffiti
prints tie in to the art-loving mission statement without limiting
future renovations. Eclectic furniture picks-including bargain
finds, vintage and modern pieces-make swapping out individual
pieces, instead of a full-on FF&E redux, a viable choice down the
line. "We ensure there are a lot of large-scale graphics and
contemporary art, both digital and static, as these are easy to
change over time in soft refurbishments," says Graham.
Longevity isn't just about keeping options open. Catching
the next wave is key for urban hotels-even ones on iconic
beaches-looking to stay ahead of the game.
