Forget about the notion of "attending" a trade fair.
The seventh annual Boutique Design New York (BDNY)
trade fair and conference, being held Nov. 13 and
14 in New York's Javits Center, is all about getting
involved. That starts with stepping into the sky's-thelimit concepts for the five Designed Spaces being built
out on the trade fair floor. Here's a sneak peek at these
must-see networking lounges.

The masterminds: P3 Design Collective.

The backstory: As the name implies, the
space is an homage to the genre-bending and
blending that made Prince an icon. "We draw
inspiration from a multitude of sources blurring
the lines between the arts: fashion, art, music and
dance," says Purkat. "We felt that Prince worked in
a similar way, and the controversy around this song
made it a perfect expression of our views on artistic
freedom and censorship."
The teaching moments: Doing your
homework is cool. The censorship battle that the
song's lyrics started gets a nod with a parental
advisory sticker as the focal point on the bar front.
Encapsulated purple drops on the bar front refer
to another iconic Prince hit. And, says Cuellar, they
took the artist's broad musical scope and translated
it into experiments with materiality. Converting
the original vision for a central canopy into a light
feature adds in an additional visual layer.
The magic touches: Cut the velvet rope.
Interactive digital art invites guests to engage with
the pieces, says Sibert. Pulling together different
disciplines helps maintain the integrity of the
space's inspiration, says Benesch.
