RED ROOF LATEST TO JOIN
STAMPEDE INTO SOFT BRANDS
Add Red Roof to the list of large-scale hoteliers to launch a soft brand of independent properties. Dubbed The Red Collection, the new concept is slated to debut
next year with the opening of The St. Clair Hotel in downtown Chicago (shown).
"In today's environment, soft brands allow companies to enter new channels, expand business models and meet specific demands of the new traveler,"
says Red Roof president Andrew Alexander. "The Red Collection will give our
existing guests unique, more upscale value options while enticing new guests
to experience our brand in a new way in the hearts of cities they love."
Red Roof says the soft-brand launch comes on the heels of extensive
consumer research which found that today's upscale economy travelers
aren't looking for hotels that are identified as "trendy" or "hip"-which they
equate with expensive and fleeting. Instead, such travelers are looking for
modern, accessible and affordable properties with enhanced amenities in
prime locations near the things they enjoy doing.
Red Roof officials say they expect The Red Collection to also be attractive to
franchisees. "Our new soft brand provides alternative business opportunities
and additional avenues of growth in high-demand locations," says Phil Hugh,
the hotelier's chief development officer.
In addition to Chicago, Red Roof says it's eying Austin, Charlotte, Las Vegas and
New York as likely initial markets for the collection. The company's mainstay
economy hotel brand, meantime, consists of more 500 properties in the U.S., and the
hotelier is also expanding internationally to Brazil, Canada, Japan and Thailand.
CORRECTION
The new name of the Wyoming motel whose makeover was detailed in The
Buzz section of the September 2017 edition (page 10) was incorrectly given in
the text; it is the Mountain Modern Motel. The project is also a finalist in the
2017 Gold Key Awards for Excellence in Hospitality Design, for best lobby and
best guest room in the budget/focused service sector.
