THE ITINERARY: Take guests out of NYC and into an abstract
version of "Alice in Wonderland."
THE ROADMAP: The team bypassed the literal references to
Lewis Carroll's book in favor of a more oblique approach. "As
soon as the theme was selected, we set parameters for the
concept to be distilled, contemporary and über luxe. There will
be a forest, but it is an architectural forest. There will be a play
of scale, but it is a reinterpreted play," says Poon. The team takes
Carroll's imagination as their jumping-off point. Making that
happen in a temporary space isn't a question of simplifying the
design. Shutze points out that the execution of each element has
to have the same quality and polish as a permanent installation.
THE SIGHTS: Remixed versions of iconic elements from the
book make the theming intriguing, not blatant. An abstract,
distilled design of the forest captures the atmosphere of the
source material, but its sharp, minimal shapes and spiky
lines give it a modern edge. Contemporary interpretations of
chandeliers are themed as birds' nests become crystal accent
pieces. Furniture pieces are themed for key characters, such
as Alice, the March Hare and the Caterpillar, and each has
his, her or its own seat. Every character's chair starts with a
wood base, but leather, fabric and metal parts give each seat a
distinct personality. Guests are invited to imagine themselves
eavesdropping on the story.
THE SOUVENIRS: Even in temporary design, dynamics plays on
proportion and eye-catching design twists are just as important
as in a permanent space. Rotating crystal formations in the
lighting offer mobile dazzle. Outsizing the forest element
reinforces the skewed perspective that defines the novel's
scenes. "We strive to create a three-dimensional art and
sculpture for you to experience," says Poon.
