MaXiMalisM

aDaPtiVe reuse

In 2018, more is more. This year ornate, highly detailed designs are set to
take the place of mid-century minimalism. "Maximalism will step into the
mainstream again but it will look different from what we saw coming out
of the Netherlands at the start of the century," says Nicola Casale, director
of Yellow Goat Design's North American division. "We expect to see a mix
of colors, patterns and styles colliding to create individualized, futuristic
sculptures that evoke emotion and impact within interior spaces."

From light fixtures crafted from pieces of destroyed buildings to end tables
fashioned from reclaimed wood like the Molten line from Phillips Collection
(center), watch for a boom in creative approaches to reuse this year. "There's
an incredible karma between old and new at work in adaptive reuse projects,"
says Bruce Rosenbaum, the co-founder of ModVic, a specialist in Steampunk
design. Rosenbaum, who oversaw the Hospitality Artist and Maker Space at
Boutique Design New York (BDNY) 2017, maintains that repurposing materials is
important because it "gives new life and meaning to products that have a history."

saturateD Color

Move over Millennial Pink. Straying away from the soft pastels of yesteryear,
in 2018 expect a rise in rich, saturated color palettes like those used in
BySwans' Eleanor bar chair (left, above). Pantone paves the way for this trend
with its Color of the Year, Ultra Violet, a deep blue-based purple. "We are
living in a time that requires inventiveness and imagination," says Leatrice
Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. "From exploring
new technologies and the greater galaxy, to artistic expression and spiritual
reflection, intuitive Ultra Violet lights the way to what is yet to come."
Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore also upped the intensity with their
respective color picks for the year: Oceanside, a jewel-toned blue-green; and
Caliente, a vibrant red-hot hue.

MiXeD Metals

Shine bright with high-contrast metallic finishes. This year the focus will
be on designs that showcase luxury materials such as the bronze Tropical
Fossil panel from Ginaluca Pacchioni (right). "I've seen a lot of mixed metals
recently. One of the most popular is the combination of nickel, copper and
brass," says New York-based interior products designer Stacy Garcia, who
also expects to see an increase in luxury materials driven by the maximalism
mentioned earlier, including velvet, suede, high-gloss finishes, acrylic, fringe
and other fun embellishments. "Pay close attention to matte finishes," says
Garcia. "We love the contrast of pairing matte with sheen." -Sarah Chaplin
